Premier League heavyweights Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on signing Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona this summer.
According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Tottenham Hotspur will look to secure the services of Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan deal in the summer transfer window. Antonio Conte has given the green light to pursue the Barcelona defender, who could agree to move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Clement Lenglet joined Barcelona from Sevilla in July 2018 and has since endured a topsy turvy ride at Camp Nou. While the Frenchman was solid in his first two seasons with the Blaugrana, his stock has fallen considerably this term, as he has managed around only 1,100 minutes of action in 26 appearances across all competitions.
With Barcelona in the market to sign more centre-backs in the summer transfer window, Lenglet will need to seek a new challenge ahead of the 2022/23 season to stand a chance of going to the 2022 FIFA World Cup with France. And several clubs are involved in the race to sign the 26-year-old defender from Barcelona, including Tottenham.
Tottenham will need to sign at least one centre-back in the summer transfer window as Joe Rodon is surplus to requirements at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. In addition, Japhet Tanganga also faces an uncertain future at the north London club, leaving Antonio Conte with only four central defensive options at his disposal.
Among those, Ben Davies is on the wrong side of 30, and Tottenham will need to start phasing him out as a regular in the coming season. Lenglet has thus emerged as a viable target for Spurs. With the French international a left-footed defender, Conte could have a natural replacement for Davies in the Barcelona defender.
According to SPORT, Tottenham will look to sign Lenglet on a season-long loan deal instead of pursuing a permanent move for him. Barcelona might not have any option but to accept the proposal as his €6 million-a-year wages are prohibitive for prospective suitors, especially considering they are eager to offload him in the summer transfer window.
Widespread reports have claimed that Lenglet remains undecided on his future amid interest from clubs across Europe. But joining Tottenham will give the Barcelona defender the chance to feature prominently before Didier Deschamps finalises the France squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium might become an even more attractive destination if Spurs qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
