Real Madrid are reportedly planning to offer a new contract to young forward Rodrygo Goes before the start of the next season.
According to ABC, newly-crowned La Liga champions Real Madrid are working on handing a new contract to Brazilian forward Rodrygo Goes ahead of the summer transfer window.
Rodrygo arrived at Real Madrid from Brazilian giants Santos FC in the summer of 2019 and has grown into one of the most exciting young prospects in Europe. While he has found it hard to earn a regular starting berth at the Santiago Bernabeu due to the competition in the squad, the 21-year-old has always made his opportunities count.
So far this season, Rodrygo has featured 47 times across all competitions, out of which only 24 have been starts. Despite that, the young forward has racked up a total goal-contribution tally of 19 (nine goals, ten assists).
Rodrygo’s biggest contribution of the season came earlier this month in the UEFA Champions League semi-final second-leg clash against Manchester City when he came on as a substitute to score a stoppage-time brace to help Real Madrid pull off an unlikely comeback and qualify for the finals.
Rodrygo’s current contract with Real Madrid runs until the summer of 2025, with the wonderkid having signed a six-year deal upon arriving from Santos in 2019. Even though there are three years left on his deal, as per the report, Real Madrid are working on a new contract for the 21-year-old Brazilian international.
It is claimed that the forward is one among several players set to be rewarded with new deals, which includes Luka Modric, whose current contract expires next month, along with Karim Benzema and Nacho Fernandez, both of whom are out of contract next year.
The report also adds that Rodrygo’s compatriot, Vinicius Junior, is also in line for a new extension, as is midfield mainstay Toni Kroos, even though it has been rumoured that the German midfield maestro might retire in 2023.
The contract extensions for all the aforementioned six players are already in the works, and things are reportedly progressing positively. And an announcement could be made as early as June. As for Rodrygo, even though he still has three years left on his deal, a pay bump in line with his contributions to the side would be well-deserved.
