Newcastle United are reportedly interested in a move for the experienced Kasper Schmeichel, who could depart Leicester City in the summer.
According to talkSPORT, Kasper Schmeichel is a target for Newcastle United, as the Premier League side want an experienced goalkeeper for next season. The Danish star could depart Leicester City in the summer, although contract talks are planned between the player and club after the campaign ends.
Newcastle United are planning ahead for a big summer window, as the club harbour ambitions to finish in the top-six next season. There is plenty of work needed with their squad and recruitments, as the Magpies are keen to keep it sensible than splashing the cash.
Their intentions were clear in the January window, as they adopted a much more calculated approach in the market. The strategy worked out, as they erased any fear of relegation and comfortably climbed up the table.
Among the positions Newcastle United are planning to bring new players in, the goalkeeping area is one of their priorities. They have been linked to Manchester United’s Dean Henderson, although there could be complications with completing the transfer as the Englishman is a man in demand, and had been courted by other clubs in England.
Arsenal’s Bernd Leno has also been mentioned as a target in the past, along with Jordan Pickford, who could be available if Everton suffer relegation. It looks like the Magpies are eyeing a goalkeeper with Premier League pedigree, and those names are a match.
Now Kasper Schmeichel has also emerged as a target for the Tyneside outfit heading into the summer transfer window. For their short to mid-term objectives, the Dane could be an ideal option.
Leicester City have endured a difficult season and are set to miss out on European football next term. It has put Brendan Rodgers under tremendous pressure to shuffle his pack in the summer. If the manager stays, he could make significant changes to the squad by using the upcoming transfer window wisely.
Schmeichel, who has played 476 games for the Foxes in all competitions could potentially be staring at the exit door in search of a new challenge. And Newcastle United could be the ideal destination for the veteran to bring his immense experience and character.
While there have been no real problems with the performances despite his advancing age, Leicester are expected to sit down and discuss his future. Schmeichel’s current contract runs until 2023 and the upcoming summer would be the Foxes’ last chance to recoup some money if the 35-year-old decides to move on.
Given his experience and leadership attributes, Schmeichel can be a fine addition to St James’ Park. But Newcastle United may opt to go for a younger option with an eye on their long-term plans.
