Real Madrid are reportedly set to reward experienced defender Nacho Fernandez with a new contract, with an agreement understood to be close.
According to Defensa Central, Real Madrid defender Nacho Fernandez is closing in on an agreement over a new contract, with the club rewarding the seasoned campaigner for his contributions.
A product of La Fabrica, Nacho made his first-team debut for Real Madrid more than a decade ago in 2011. While he has never exactly been an undisputed start for Los Blancos, the Spaniard has been more than a handy squad player who has found favour under each of the managers that he has worked with during his time in the first team.
Nacho has made 272 appearances for Real Madrid, chalking up 15 goals and registering eight assists as well. A versatile operator, the 32-year-old can play across the backline and this flexibility has made him a valuable commodity in the squad.
The defender has filled several positions over the course of the 2021/22 campaign, racking up 39 appearances in the process. He has impressed manager Carlo Ancelotti with his leadership on the field and his commitment to the team.
So, even though, Real Madrid are set to sign Antonio Rudiger on a free transfer in the summer, they want Nacho to be a part of the team as an example and a role model for youngsters coming through the club’s La Fabrica youth setup.
To that end, the newly-crowned Spanish champions are set to hand the 32-year-old defender a new contract, with an agreement said to be imminent. Nacho’s current deal with Real Madrid runs until the summer of 2023. As per the report, Los Merengues are adding another year on top of that to extend his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu until 2024.
The report further states that Nacho will not be getting a raise on his current salary, with the defender said to be perfectly happy with the €4 million-a-year deal he is currently on. The Spanish international has played for Real Madrid throughout his career. By the time the new contract runs out in 2024, he will be 34 years old and might very well finish his career as a one-club man.
