Antonio Conte is reportedly eyeing key defensive recruitments and wants Tottenham to sign Marc Cucurella in the summer from Brighton & Hove Albion.
According to Fichajes, Tottenham are interested in signing Marc Cucurella from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer. The 23-year-old Spanish defender is considered a key defensive target for his performances this season in the Premier League with the Seagulls, having played in multiple positions in Graham Potter’s side.
Tottenham are still in the race for a top-four finish and are competing with Arsenal for the coveted UEFA Champions League spot. There are still four games to go in the season, and things still could go in Spurs’ favour before the campaign ends. Irrespective of which European competition the north Londoners play in, they could make big moves in the next transfer window.
The Tottenham board is keen to continue with Antonio Conte and wants to back the Italian in rebuilding the squad and make them title contenders next season. There is still a huge gap in quality between Tottenham and the current title chasers. To close this gulf, they would need to have a substantial transfer window, with several key signings planned.
Conte will request key defensive signings in the summer, considering plenty of importance is placed on the five players that start each game. The Tottenham manager likes to play with wing-backs and three centre-backs, and there is plenty of space to reinforce.
Tottenham are linked with Inter Milan defenders Stefan de Vrij and Alessandro Bastoni, as Conte wants a reunion with the players he relied upon in Serie A. Spurs’ manager would want one of the two centre-backs in addition to a left-sided defender who is versatile enough to play on the wings.
Marc Cucurella is the name suggested by the media, with Tottenham reportedly interested in the versatile Brighton defender. The former Barcelona man has been a revelation in the Premier League since making a £16 million move from Getafe last summer.
Cucurella’s ability to play in a left wing-back role has earned plaudits, but Graham Potter has recently deployed him as a left centre-back in a back-three with good effect. The 23-year-old defender can play well in a back-three and out wide, which makes him an attractive player in Conte’s eyes.
Brighton only signed Cucurella last summer and will not let him leave for cheap and may place a big price tag on the Spanish defender. Tottenham have previously refused to overspend on targets, which has cost them deals, but if Conte insists he wants the 23-year-old Spanish defender, Daniel Levy might sanction a move.
