Manchester United will reportedly compete with Barcelona in the race to sign Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Sergio Reguilon could leave Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window, with Antonio Conte deeming him surplus to requirements. Barcelona and Manchester United will vie for the signature of the former Real Madrid defender.
Sergio Reguilon spent most of his formative years with Real Madrid but could never manage to establish a foothold in the first-team setup at the Santiago Bernabeu upon turning professional. While the 25-year-old enjoyed a solid 2018/19 campaign, Zinedine Zidane decided to ship him out on loan to Sevilla for the 2019/20 season.
Upon returning to the Bernabeu, Real Madrid sold him to Tottenham Hotspur in September 2020. But the Spaniard has failed to progress at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, chipping in with two goals and three assists in 31 appearances this term. And it looks like Antonio Conte’s frustrations have boiled over, with Spurs ready to offload him in the summer. Barcelona or Manchester United could be Reguilon’s next destination.
Barcelona will need to invest in a left-back in the summer transfer window due to Jordi Alba’s advancing years and Alejandro Balde’s inability to establish a foothold in the first-team setup. As a result, several left-backs have emerged on Barcelona’s radar, including Reguilon, who can be a solid long-term solution in the position.
As for Manchester United, sweeping changes could be in order following the appointment of Erik ten Hag as their new manager. The incoming head coach will look to mould the squad in his image, and signing a left-back could be on the agenda amid the inconsistencies of Luke Shaw and Alex Telles.
Reguilon has thus emerged as a viable target for Manchester United, who had attempted to sign him in 2020 before setting sights on Alex Telles instead. Apart from Barcelona and Manchester United, the Tottenham defender is also a target for Juventus heading into the summer transfer window.
