PSG will reportedly provide stiff competition to Manchester United in the race to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona in the summer.
According to a report by Italian outlet Calciomercato, Frenkie de Jong is the subject of interest from Paris Saint-Germain over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Barcelona midfielder is also a target for Manchester United, with the Dutchman considering his departure from Camp Nou.
Frenkie de Jong joined Barcelona from Ajax in July 2019, thereby completing a dream move. But de Jong’s stint at Camp Nou has coincided with one of Barcelona’s worst modern-day runs as a club amid their crippling financial woes and sporting crisis.
However, the 24-year-old has remained a consistent performer over the last three years apart from a period of inconsistency earlier this season. To date, the Dutch midfielder has turned out 136 times for Barcelona, chipping in with 13 goals and 17 assists in the process. But de Jong’s Barcelona future is up in the air, with Manchester United and PSG his prospective suitors.
The interest from Manchester United comes in the wake of the realisation that Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic will leave as free agents in the summer transfer window. The duo’s exit will leave incoming Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag short of quality midfield options, bringing de Jong into the picture.
The Barcelona midfielder can be a one-stop solution to fill Pogba and Matic’s void at Old Trafford, making him a viable target for Manchester United. But the Red Devils face stiff competition from PSG in the race to sign the 24-year-old from Barcelona in the summer transfer window.
PSG will need to invest in a top-class midfielder ahead of the 2022/23 season, with the midfield department being the Achilles heel in their loaded squad. Idrissa Gueye and Ander Herrera are on the wrong side of 30, while Georginio Wijnaldum has been dreadful thus far this term. Signing de Jong will thus be a step in the right direction for PSG.

Apart from Manchester United and PSG, de Jong is also a target for Bayern Munich. And with recent reports claiming that the 24-year-old is considering leaving Barcelona, his suitors could fancy their chances of snapping him up. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for de Jong.
