Barcelona step up interest in Alejandro Grimaldo

La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly stepping up their efforts to snap up 26-year-old Spanish left-back Alejandro Grimaldo in the summer.

According to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, the contact between Barcelona and Alejandro Grimaldo has resumed. The Catalan giants are thus intensifying their efforts to prise the 26-year-old Spanish left-back away from Benfica in the summer transfer window.

Alejandro Grimaldo has come leaps and bounds since joining Benfica from Barcelona in January 2016. A product of Barcelona’s famed youth academy, La Masia, the Spaniard has been a pivotal figure for the Portuguese giants over the last half a dozen years, although he is yet to make his Spain debut.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed a solid 2021/22 campaign, chipping in with six goals and nine assists in 47 appearances across all competitions. But Grimaldo’s contract situation has put Benfica in a spot of bother, with his deal expiring in a little over a year. That has not gone unnoticed, with Barcelona reportedly keen on re-signing the Spanish left-back.

Barcelona will likely delve into the market for a left-back in the summer transfer window, as Jordi Alba has shown signs that is age catching up with him. While the veteran Spanish left-back can still roll back the years, he is not consistent enough to justify starting most games in a season.

With Alejandro Balde yet to settle down in the first-team setup at Camp Nou, the Catalan giants have to enter the market for a left-back. As a result, several players have emerged on Barcelona’s radar, including former academy ace Alejandro Grimaldo.

In addition to the 26-year-old, Nicolas Tagliafico, Alex Moreno, and Javi Galan are also on Barcelona’s radar, with Galan reportedly closing in on joining the Blaugrana. But Grimaldo appears to be a key target for Barcelona, with contacts between the two parties reigniting.

According to the report, Grimaldo prefers to rejoin Barcelona in the summer transfer window instead of another club. And if claims of Galan being close to joining Barcelona are false, then the 26-year-old Spanish left-back could become an option for the Blaugrana to pursue.
