Newcastle United will reportedly provide stiff competition to Arsenal and AC Milan in the race to sign Marco Asensio from Real Madrid.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Marco Asensio has popped up on the radar of Newcastle United over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Real Madrid forward is also a target for Arsenal and AC Milan, with a departure from the Santiago Bernabeu possible.
Marco Asensio has enjoyed one of the most productive seasons of his career, yet he continues to flounder at Real Madrid. The 26-year-old has racked up 11 goals in 37 appearances thus far this term but remains a rotation option for Carlo Ancelotti at the Santiago Bernabeu.
In addition, the Spaniard’s delicate contract situation has been brewing in the background, with his Real Madrid deal running out in a little over a year. While the Merengues are determined to tie the player down to a new contract, the two parties are yet to agree to a renewal. Such a situation has captured the attention of Newcastle United, Arsenal, and AC Milan.
Newcastle United had been briefly linked with Asensio in the January transfer window before the Spanish forward decided to stay put at Real Madrid. And Asensio could be a game-changing addition at St. James’ Park, considering Newcastle United’s current options lack the consistency to make them a formidable team in the final third.
Meanwhile, the interest from Arsenal stems from the rampant uncertainties surrounding Nicolas Pepe. The Ivory Coast international has become a bit-part player this season and could depart from the Emirates in the summer transfer window. Arsenal will thus need to invest in a wide-attacker, making Asensio a viable target.
In addition to Newcastle United and Arsenal, Asensio has also been heavily linked with AC Milan. The Serie A giants could become lavish spenders if their proposed takeover goes through ahead of the summer transfer window.
The race to sign Asensio from Real Madrid is heating up with the emergence of Newcastle United. It will be interesting to see if Asensio decides to call it quits at Real Madrid to join a new project and if his next destination is St. James’ Park instead of Arsenal or AC Milan.
