Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Aston Villa are all vying for the signature of 28-year-old German international Matthias Ginter.
According to reports by Sky Sports, Aston Villa are one of the clubs interested in Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter. The 28-year-old centre-back is also being courted by the likes of West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus among other clubs.
A Freiburg youth product, Ginter’s first move away from the club came in 2014, when he joined Borussia Dortmund for €10 million. He represented the Bundesliga giants for three years, making 102 appearances for them across competitions, scoring four and assisting 12 goals for them.
However, the 28-year-old German international could not cement his spot in the Dortmund first team and was not often used as a first-choice centre-back at Signal Iduna Park. Ginter was also used as a defensive midfielder and a right-back. Borussia Monchengladbach eventually came calling in 2017, and Ginter joined them in a €17 million move.
He has been a mainstay in the Gladbach defence since he arrived at the club and has made 177 appearances for them across competitions. This season, he has started 26 of their 29 Bundesliga matches and has also scored a goal. But the 28-year-old’s contract is set to expire this summer and Ginter has chosen against signing an extension.
The 28-year-old German international is still weighing his options with the likes of Aston Villa, West Ham United and Tottenham, all interested. Juventus are another high-profile club monitoring Ginter’s situation, leaving him with plenty of options to choose from.
Under Steven Gerrard, Aston Villa have had a decent season and are a point off 10th-placed Crystal Palace. The Villans are preparing to provide the former Liverpool captain with funds to improve his squad, and they have identified Ginter as an update on the options they currently have.
West Ham, too, are eager to continue challenging for European spots and have identified the German defender as a possible signing. A central-defensive signing is their priority and Ginter could be a good option. That said, West Ham have also been linked with several other central defenders, including Gerzino Nyamsi.
On the other hand, Tottenham Hotspur are preparing for a summer overhaul under Antonio Conte. They have Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez, Cristian Romero, Japhet Tanganga and Joe Rodon as their current central defensive options. But adding Ginter will solidify the Tottenham defence manifold, making the 28-year-old a viable target. But with Juventus also involved in the race, it will be interesting to see where he will end up in the summer.
