Manchester United have set their sights on RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer following his exceptional performance against Borussia Dortmund.
According to a report from Bild, Manchester United are weighing up a potential move for Konrad Laimer this summer. The RB Leipzig midfielder’s current contract with the Bundesliga club expires at the end of next season, and the player has remained tight-lipped on his future so far, thus putting Manchester United on alert.
Laimer has raised many eyebrows this month by starring in RB Leipzig’s exceptional 4-1 win over Borussia Dortmund. He bagged one goal and two assists in the win, helping his team solidify its position in the race to finish inside the top four in the Bundesliga. Manchester United have taken note of the 24-year-old midfielder’s performance and view him as a potential summer target.
Manchester United’s current interim boss Ralf Rangnick, who is set to take up a consultancy role from next season, is already well aware of Laimer, having played a key role in bringing him from Red Bull Salzburg in 2017.
After joining Leipzig, Laimer has racked up almost 150 competitive appearances for the Bundesliga outfit, establishing himself as a reliable central midfielder who has the drive and panache to move forward, if necessary. The 24-year-old is also an exceptionally versatile player as he can operate as a wide midfielder or even a number six.
Manchester United are currently in desperate need of a reliable midfielder heading into next season amid uncertainties over the future of Paul Pogba. The Frenchman’s contract expires at the end of the season, with Real Madrid reportedly in contact to secure his services on a free transfer.
There is also a general consensus over the lack of quality among the other existing stars, including Scott McTominay and Fred, whereas Nemanja Matic is way past his prime. It has accentuated the need for fresh faces in the midfield unit, forcing Manchester United to consider move for players such as Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
While Manchester United may have to cough up €60 million for the Lazio star, Konrad Laimer could be an excellent cost-effective alternative. The 24-year-old Austrian international already has vast experience at the highest level of football and should not find it difficult to settle in at Old Trafford, thanks to his excellent relationship with Rangnick.
Laimer is not the only Leipzig player to be targeted by Manchester United either, with the Premier League giants also keeping tabs on Christopher Nkunku, another player who starred in the recent win over Dortmund in the Bundesliga.
