Tottenham Hotspur are planning to re-sign Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale for a third spell at the club.
According to football journalist Dean Jones, as told to Football Transfer Tavern, Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy is contemplating signing Gareth Bale back in the summer transfer window. Bale’s contract with current La Liga leaders Real Madrid expires this summer and he would be free to join any club on a Bosman.
The 32-year-old grew into a world-beater during his first spell with Tottenham, which prompted Real Madrid to shell out £85 million for him in the summer transfer window in 2013, making him the most expensive signing of all time at that moment.
Suggestions that Bale has struggled during his time in Madrid are far from being true as the Welshman has been highly influential in one of the club’s most successful periods in their rich history.
In 256 appearances for the Spanish giants, he has scored 106 goals and provided 67 assists. Bale has won four Champions League and two La Liga titles with Los Blancos among other accolades in a highly fruitful spell in the Spanish capital.
Due to recurring injury issues, a dip in form, and a falling out with manager Zinedine Zidane, Bale was shipped out on a year-long loan to Tottenham in the 2020/21 season. He returned a mixed bag, scoring 11 times in the Premier League, but most of them came in patches as the Welshman couldn’t maintain consistency.
Back at Real Madrid, there were hopes that he could get a proper run under Carlo Ancelotti this season. But that has not been the case as he has featured just five times across all competitions, scoring a solitary goal. The Welsh international has been on the receiving end of some harsh criticism from the Spanish media but has shown that he still has plenty left to offer while on national team duty.
And, with his contract with Real Madrid now coming to an end, Bale looks all set to end his stint in Spain and is left to look for potential suitors. The 32-year-old seems to have found one in his former employer, Tottenham.
This would be the Welshman’s third spell with the north London club if he joins them in the summer. The 32-year-old’s high wages could be an issue, however, especially with Real Madrid not being obliged to pay half his compensations.
