Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a summer swoop for in-demand RSC Anderlecht starlet Sergio Gomez.
According to a report from Anderlecht Online, Manchester United are one of two clubs preparing an offer for Sergio Gomez in the summer. The RSC Anderlecht youngster has become one of the most sought-after players in Belgium after arriving from Borussia Dortmund at the start of the season.
Manchester United’s interest in the player was revealed earlier this week. And it appears the Premier League giants are prepared to follow up with their interest by making an offer for the young Spaniard, though Sevilla FC are also said to be in contention.
Formerly of the famed La Masia youth academy, Gomez had started his career as an attacking midfielder. But he has become a left-back during his time at Anderlecht. And the results have been more than appealing, with the 21-year-old racking up 14 assists in just 41 competitive outings.
Gomez’s performances have not gone unnoticed either, with the youngster also appearing as a target for a Leeds United side looking to add more competition for Junior Firpo, who has struggled with injuries since arriving from Camp Nou.
Manchester United’s interest in the youngster, meanwhile, likely stems from the uncertain future of Alex Telles. The Brazilian has struggled with game-time, while first-choice option Luke Shaw has failed to live up to expectations this term, leaving the club devoid of any reliable left-back options.
Sergio Gomez could potentially solve that problem next season. His immense technical prowess, coupled with his ability to create chances in the final third, should tune in well with someone like Erik ten Hag, who is primed to become the next manager of Manchester United next season after holding talks with the representatives earlier in the month.
At the age of just 21, Gomez has a bright future ahead of him. His creativity out wide has been a prominent feature in his game, and one could expect him to thrive under ten Hag’s system that relies a lot on technical ability and positional sense. However, Manchester United have no shortage of alternatives, having also targeted emerging Scottish wing-back Aaron Hickey, who plies his trade with Bologna in Serie A.
