Serie A giants AC Milan have reportedly made exploratory contact with Divock Origi’s camp, with the Belgian is set to leave Liverpool as a free agent.
According to Calciomercato, AC Milan are keen on signing Divock Origi in the summer, with the Serie A giants initiating exploratory contacts with the Belgian striker’s camp. The Liverpool forward will leave the club as a free agent when his contract expires in the summer.
There is a general feeling that Divock Origi was not given a fair chance to flourish at Liverpool, despite spending many seasons at the club. The Anfield faithful will fondly remember the forward for his immense contribution in the UEFA Champions League-winning campaign of 2019, where he scored two crucial goals in the semi-final and one in the final.
Despite those heroics, the striker has often found himself on the periphery and sit contentedly on the bench for many seasons. Injuries to key stars or cup competitions forced Jurgen Klopp to play Origi regularly, but he may now look towards a more stable role at another club.
Origi is set to leave Liverpool as a free agent, with his contract expiring in the summer. There is interest from English club, including West Ham United, who are plotting a Bosman move. Clubs from other leagues are also keen on the Belgian forward, who may decide on his next destination in the close season.
When the interest was heavy, he could have moved in the January transfer window, as clubs were willing to pay a modest fee to take Origi off Liverpool’s books. However, the Africa Cup of Nations and other commitments meant Klopp did not want to weaken the Liverpool squad at that juncture and decided to keep Origi beyond the winter.
Liverpool may hold no such powers in the summer, as many clubs will entice him with attractive offers over a Bosman move. The 27-year-old Belgian striker has many years left at the top, and clubs would realise he is entering his prime, making the prospect of signing him all the more attractive, especially on a free transfer.
AC Milan are reportedly keen on signing Origi, as the Serie A giants want to reinforce their attack. They are not flush with youngsters in the forward department, as veteran strikers Olivier Giroud and Zlatan Ibrahimovic take turns leading the line.
The AC Milan hierarchy were impressed by the Belgian during their Champions League clash with Liverpool earlier this season. Origi scored in that contest, and since then, the Rossoneri have been keen on signing him. They have already initiated exploratory contacts with the Liverpool striker’s camp and could make an offer in the coming weeks.
The Serie A giants face competition from domestic rivals Napoli, who remain keen on signing Origi. However, Milan could be a far more attractive prospect, given their young developing squad is ready to explode in the coming seasons.
So far, no decision has been made by Origi’s entourage, who could decide their next destination as soon as the Belgian forward’s contract with Liverpool expires in June.
