Manchester United were knocked out of the FA Cup as Wolves notched up a narrow, albeit well deserved 2-1 win in the quarter-final at Molineux on Saturday.
The first half was a scrappy affair, with chances coming few and far between on either end of the pitch. But, Wolves appeared to have the edge over Manchester United at the break, with Sergio Romero forced into a fine save by Diogo Jota from the edge of the box.
Post the interval, Manchester United continued to hog the possession, but failed to do anything of note with it. Wolves, on the other hand, posed a great deal of danger on the counter-attack and duly grabbed the lead in the 70th minute.
Raul Jimenez, who had had a shot saved by Romero early into the second half, saw the ball drop kindly to him and he turned to score from inside the United box. And, six minutes later, the win was effectively sealed when Jota finished off a slick counter-attacking move, beating Romero at his near post.
The visitors though, saw the last piece of action as Marcus Rashford scored from close range, but it was too little too late for Manchester United. And, fans talked about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s shortcomings in the aftermath of the quarter-final ouster, although some remained positive.
Especially players like that. They need all the confidence they can get. #mufc

The international break has come at a good time for United. Hopefully there isn’t a massive overreaction. Solskjaer has been tremendous since he’s been in charge, we were unlucky last week but today got what we deserved. Still a UCL quarter final to come! Onwards we go. ?? #mufc

Bit of attacking impetus and we get a goal. Lovely finish from Rashford but it’s too late. Gutted. Could’ve been a realistic trophy chance. Really disappointing. So flat until that one attack in the 95th minute.

Solskjaer isn’t perfect. He’ll make mistakes but he’s learning every day, he’s also the best thing that’s happened to Man United since 2013. Remember how bad it was before he was appointed? We have a QF against Barcelona to look forward to. Could be worse ??

Wheels have come off. We have Barcelona next ?

Before Solskjaer’s appointment we were nowhere near the top 4 and realistically we were going to get spanked by PSG the way we were playing. Three months on and we’ve beaten Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal and PSG, we’re two points off top 4 and are into a UCL QF. Keep the faith! #mufc

Rubbish from United. Worst performance under Solskjaer by a mile. Deserve to go out.

We went to Paris and won without 10 players, Wolves are no pushovers but the absence of DDG, or Lukaku shouldn’t matter. United should be winning these games and the FA Cup is worth winning. It’s infuriating #MUFC

Why drop #Mctominay also ? He was outstanding.

Ole showing signs of amateurish management. First, getting on Lingard as a sub who was carrying an injury, over Sanchez, who he eventually brought on. Second, starting Matic, Martial, Lingard when they’re not back to match-fitness and burning out Rashford with Lukaku available.

Meanwhile, fans also lamented the poor performance by Paul Pogba and attacking trio.
Martial, Rashford, Pogba and Lingard that turned up vs Wolves in the #FACup ? pic.twitter.com/K2WmwUMfX5

Martial Lingard Rash Pogba not affecting the game at all. Been poor

My thoughts on tonight’s loss:
– No urgency in our play
– Lack of creativity
– Players looked unfit
– Romero saved it from being 4-0
– Martial, Lingard & Rashford disappointing
– Pogba’s worst game under Ole
– No RW option is killing us
– Lukaku was missed
– No need to overreact— Aidan Walsh ? (@AidanWalshMUFC) March 16, 2019
For weeks the players gave every last ounce of energy. You felt they’d do anything to get the result. But two games in a row now, the players have looked lifeless and crap. How can they go from that PSG comeback to this? They should be embarrassed. Gross performance.
