Barcelona forward Memphis Depay has insisted that he wants to stay at Camp Nou for “several more years” amid speculations surrounding his future.
In an interview following Barcelona’s win over RCD Mallorca, as quoted by Barca Universal, Memphis Depay has responded to widespread speculations surrounding his future. The Dutch forward has reaffirmed that he wants to remain at Camp Nou for “several more years”.
Memphis Depay completed the biggest move of his career when he joined Barcelona in a Bosman move last summer after running down his contract with Lyon. The expectations surrounding the 28-year-old were naturally high, as he was coming off a successful stint with Les Gones. But Depay’s form has nosedived after a strong start to the season.
The Dutch international has a sub-par tally of 12 goals and two assists in 34 appearances across all competitions thus far this term. But Depay is still Barcelona’s top scorer this season, making it a decent debut campaign at Camp Nou. However, ahead of a crucial summer transfer window for Barcelona, Depay has been heavily linked with several high profile clubs across Europe.
Various Serie A bigwigs have shown an interest in the Barcelona forward, while a return to the Premier League might also be on the cards. But after scoring in Barcelona’s win over RCD Mallorca, Depay was jubilant and in the mood to hit back at the speculations surrounding his future.
Depay has insisted that he wants to stay at FC Barcelona for a long time, reaffirming that he will not depart from Camp Nou in the summer transfer window. The Dutchman said, “I came here with the desire to play for the team. I want to be important in the team for next year and for several more years.”
Depay also took the opportunity to give his support to Ansu Fati following the youngster’s long-awaited return to action this past weekend, saying, “Ansu is a special and happy boy. I’m very happy to see him return. It’s important for him and his family. We have to take care of him because he is a special talent, and with time he will come back.”
Arsenal, Everton, and Newcastle United are some of the English clubs vying for Depay’s signature. But with the 28-year-old keen on staying put at Barcelona, it will be interesting to see if he extends his stay at Camp Nou or embarks on a new adventure.
