Tottenham Hotspur have identified Graham Potter as their desired replacement for Antonio Conte.
A recent report from Telegraph has offered an update on Tottenham Hotspur’s managerial situation. The Lilywhites are staring at an uncertain future ahead, with speculations linking Antonio Conte to a move away from the club. Although the Italian is keen on waiting until the end of the season, Spurs have started their search for replacements.
One of their top targets is Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine tactician is a fan-favourite in north London and Daniel Levy could consider bringing him to the club this summer. But the report suggests Graham Potter has now become the frontrunner to become the next Tottenham boss, in case Conte departs at the end of the season.
It appears Potter is rated highly by the Tottenham hierarchy. The club’s director Fabio Paratici has been left impressed by the Englishman’s coaching methods at Brighton and would welcome his arrival ahead of the new season.
Potter has been in charge of Brighton & Hove Albion since the summer of 2019. During his three years at the club, he has helped the Seagulls establish themselves as a proper mid-table Premier League club while earning a reputation for nurturing young talents.
During his time at the club, Potter has played a key role in developing stars such as Ben White, Tariq Lamptey and Yves Bissouma, with the latter tipped to earn a big-money move in the summer, amid interest from Arsenal and Liverpool.
In addition to his skill in developing young talents, Potter is also known for his tactical nous. He is currently one of the best English managers around, if not the best. It makes him an appealing target for Tottenham, especially if they end up losing Conte in the summer.
The Lilywhites were keen on bringing in the Brighton & Hove Albion boss last summer. Chairman Daniel Levy was even willing to pay his £15 million compensation, but the Englishman wanted to remain at the Amex.
The story could change in the coming season. With one more year down in Potter’s contract, the compensation fee has reduced to just £10 million while the coach himself could be more open to leaving Brighton, in favour of taking the next step in his career.
However, Spurs’ move for the 46-year-old Potter hinges entirely on the future of Conte. The Italian has remained tight-lipped on his future so far, but with PSG likely to come for him in the summer, it won’t be surprising to see him depart the club at the end of the season.
