Liverpool have been dealt a massive blow in their hopes of keeping hold of Mohamed Salah, who has declined the club’s current proposal.
According to an update from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Mohamed Salah is staring at an uncertain future at Liverpool. The player and his agent have declined the club’s current contract offer, which is believed to be too low for the winger.
While Salah’s priority is to remain at Liverpool, the Egyptian is holding out for improved terms. Liverpool have been reluctant to meet the player’s demands in the past, and as we head towards the final phase of the campaign, the two parties are braced for crunch talks.
Formerly of Chelsea, Salah has firmly established himself as one of the best players in the world under the leadership of Jurgen Klopp. In just 237 competitive appearances for Liverpool, the winger has racked up 152 goals and 57 assists, becoming one of the top performers in the Premier League over the past few years.
Salah’s contributions have been essential in helping Liverpool win the Champions League title in 2019 as well as the Premier League title in the following season. All the while, the Egyptian has become a cult figure at Anfield, which has unsurprisingly led to calls for his demands to be met by Liverpool.
Even former striker Robbie Fowler recently urged Liverpool to extend the contract of not only Salah, but also his strike-partner Sadio Mane, as the two have been essential to the club’s success over the past few years.
But Liverpool’s apparent reluctance to hand Salah a lucrative contract could complicate things heading into the summer transfer window. The Egyptian international has already become a potential target for Real Madrid in the summer, while it would not be surprising to see PSG joining the equation as well.
Liverpool, for their part, have been scouring the market for new wide attackers, having notably targeted a move for Jarrod Bowen in the summer. It is enough to indicate that the club are entertaining the possibility of a future without Salah, though a lot may depend on how the Reds finish the ongoing campaign.
Liverpool are currently in a tense title race with Manchester City and have already booked a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. While Jurgen Klopp has ruled out the possibility of a potential quadruple, achieving something as remarkable as that could certainly see the Reds entertain the idea of renewing Salah’s contract.
