Barcelona are reportedly still interested in securing the services of Manchester United superstar Paul Pogba on a free transfer in the summer.
According to a report from Fichajes, Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba remains very much a subject of interest for La Liga heavyweights Barcelona heading into the summer transfer window.
Pogba is currently in his second stint at Manchester United. A product of the club’s academy, he left the Red Devils on a free transfer in 2012, joining Juventus in search of regular first-team football. He developed into a world-beater in Turin, compelling the Mancunian giants to sign him back for a club-record fee in 2016.
Pogba enjoyed a stunning campaign upon his return to Old Trafford, winning three trophies. However, it has all been downhill for the Frenchman ever since, as he has struggled to perform consistently, much to the disappointment of fans.
Now in the final four months of his contract with Manchester United, Pogba has shown no indication that he will renew his deal with the 20-time English champions. It has led to interest from some of the biggest clubs in Europe, with Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Real Madrid keen.
It seems like Barcelona, too, remain in the hunt for the signing of the 28-year-old. The Catalan giants had been linked with a move for the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner in the recent past, but things had gone quiet on that front, which is understandable considering the midfield options they already have.
Frenkie de Jong is expected to stay put at Camp Nou beyond this season, while Pedri is showing his class again after his injury ordeal. With Gavi and Nico Gonzalez enjoying a breakthrough campaign and Sergio Busquets still going strong, the Blaugrana have a stocked midfield department.
However, with Busquets set to enter the twilight of his career, Barcelona will need to plan for the future. With de Jong capable of playing as a No. 6, they could make room for someone like Pogba in their midfield unit. The Frenchman would add something different to the mix compared to the options that the Catalans already have.
But signing him will not be straightforward as they are not in a strong financial position like some of his other suitors. PSG are already believed to be putting together a bumper package to sign him. At the same time, Pogba himself is understood to be keen on returning to Juventus. So a move to Camp Nou seems like a distant possibility, although Barcelona remain interested.
