Arsenal have reportedly agreed a deal to sign USMNT international Matt Turner, who is set to join the Gunners camp next season.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has offered an important update in Arsenal’s pursuit of Matt Turner. It appears the north Londoners have agreed a deal with New England Revolution to sign the highly-rated American goalkeeper, with none other than USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter confirming the agreement.
Turner is expected to join the camp at London Colney at the start of next season, briefly taking part in MLS 2022 before eventually moving to England. The goalkeeper has been a part of the New England Revolution setup since 2016, establishing himself as one of the best shot-stoppers in North America in the process.
Turner has racked up over 100 competitive appearances for New England Revolution so far. His consistent performances in the MLS has recently made him the first-choice goalkeeper for USMNT, overtaking Manchester City starlet Zack Steffen.
The 27-year-old was notably voted as the best performing goalkeeper in the CONCACAF Gold Cup last summer, helping his nation win the tournament.
Turner’s performances have not gone unnoticed, with Arsenal prepared to make him their primary alternative for Aaron Ramsdale next season. Romano suggests the Gunners have splashed out around €7 million for the goalkeeper, with an additional €3 million to be paid in bonuses.
The potential arrival of the American international, though, does suggest that Arsenal are unlikely to part ways with Bernd Leno. The German is reportedly a target for Newcastle United in the ongoing transfer window, but amid fears over a lack of depth in the goalkeeping department, the move is unlikely to be sanctioned.
As for Turner, one may suggest that a move to Arsenal in the summer may hinder his progress as the 27-year-old will be expected to play second fiddle to Ramsdale. It could ultimately lead to a lack of game-time, a lot like his compatriot Steffen at Manchester City. However, the player remains keen on a move to north London despite no assurances over regular minutes.
Nevertheless, the switch could benefit the Gunners as they look to offload Leno in the summer. The German goalkeeper commands a significantly higher salary and has evidently struggled over the past 18 months. However, with clubs like Inter Milan and Newcastle United on the hunt for new goalkeepers, it won’t be surprising to see Leno land a top deal come August.
