Transfer News: PSG interested in Marco Asensio

Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly interested in signing Marco Asensio from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Diario Madridista, Marco Asensio is the subject of interest from Paris Saint-Germain over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Ligue 1 heavyweights are prepared to table a more lucrative deal to the Spanish forward than the one Real Madrid have offered.

Marco Asensio has endured a topsy turvy 2021/22 season thus far. The 26-year-old started the ongoing campaign with a hat-trick in one of his early outings before a slump in form forced him to the fringes of the starting lineups named by Carlo Ancelotti.

But the Spanish forward has turned his fortunes around superbly, with his tally for 2021/22 a respectable seven goals and one assist in 23 appearances across all competitions. Asensio’s long-term future at Real Madrid is not set in stone, as he has entered the final 18 months of his contract. With negotiations over a renewal being slow, PSG could swoop in when the summer transfer window opens.

The Ligue 1 heavyweights are primed to lose Kylian Mbappe’s services in the summer transfer window as things stand. The French international has entered the final six months of his contract with PSG and is no closer to signing a bumper new deal amid widespread links with Real Madrid.

While Les Parisiens are scrambling to secure Mbappe’s long-term future, they will need to keep their options open. To that end, several wide-attackers, including Ousmane Dembele, have been linked with PSG, with Asensio emerging as their latest target.

While Asensio has never been as prolific as Mbappe in his career, signing him on a cut-price deal could enable PSG to bring in another attacking reinforcement apart from the 26-year-old. And the French giants are ready to offer better terms than the ones tabled by Real Madrid.

While the Merengues are offering Asensio a deal worth €4 million per season in addition to variables for trophies won and games played, PSG will hand him a €6 million-a-year contract. Real Madrid will be waiting patiently to see if the Spaniard is ready to commit his long-term future by signing the contract they have tabled. But their hand could be forced if the impasse continues going into the summer transfer window, bringing PSG into contention.
