Barcelona reportedly view Edinson Cavani’s signing as a priority for January, provided the Manchester United striker proves his fitness.
According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Edinson Cavani is the preferred option for Barcelona to sign in the January transfer window, with bolstering the attacking unit a priority. The Uruguayan striker is open to leaving Manchester United this winter.
Edinson Cavani joined Manchester United on a free transfer on the deadline day of the summer transfer window last year. While the move drew its fair share of scepticism initially, the 34-year-old proved his naysayers wrong emphatically in the 2020/21 season. However, the ongoing campaign has been one to forget, as fitness issues have blighted him.
As a result, Cavani has managed to rake in just 274 minutes of game-time over six appearances, scoring only one goal in the process. And it looks like the Uruguayan striker’s time at Manchester United could be drawing to a close in the January transfer window, with Barcelona keen on signing him.
Since Sergio Aguero’s scare on the pitch several weeks ago, the Catalan giants have been forced to enter the market for a striker in the January transfer window. The Argentine striker has since been diagnosed with a heart ailment that will keep him sidelined indefinitely, leaving Barcelona bereft of a reliable striker.
The only other recognised centre-forwards at Xavi Hernandez’s disposal are Martin Braithwaite and Luuk de Jong, neither of whom inspired much confidence as regulars. So, it behoves Barcelona to sign a striker in the January transfer window, with several names already linked with the club.
However, it looks like Cavani is the priority target for Barcelona, with recent reports even indicating that talks are underway over a winter move. The only caveat is his fitness, and if the Manchester United striker can overcome his injury woes, a move to Barcelona will see the light of the day.
The Blaugrana’s prospects of signing Cavani have also been bolstered by his desire to join the club, and a January transfer appears highly likely. What remains to be seen is if the Manchester United striker can prove his fitness this month to pave the way for a switch to Camp Nou.
