Barcelona and Arsenal are reportedly vying for the signature of Mason Greenwood, who is unsettled at Manchester United.
According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Mason Greenwood is unsettled at Manchester United due to Ralf Rangnick’s reluctance to utilise him regularly. The English international is being courted by Arsenal and Barcelona, with Juventus also keeping tabs on his situation.
Mason Greenwood is one of the brightest young talents to have emanated from the Manchester United academy in the last decade. The English forward was handed his first-team breakthrough by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a few years ago, and he progressed considering under the tutelage of the Norwegian tactician.
However, since Solskjaer’s departure, Greenwood has struggled to nail down a spot as a regular, despite scoring in the recent UEFA Champions League game against BSC Young Boys. His situation has piqued the interest of several clubs, including Arsenal and Barcelona.
Interestingly, Arsenal and Barcelona are also linked with another Manchester United attacker in Anthony Martial. However, according to El Nacional, both clubs would prefer signing Greenwood if he becomes available in the transfer market, with Xavi Hernandez, in particular, driving the pursuit of the Englishman at Barcelona.
The interest from Arsenal does make sense, considering Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future has been thrown into severe doubt after being stripped of club captaincy. With Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah expected to call it quits at the Emirates in the summer, the Gunners’ need for a new striker has been accentuated.
On the other hand, Barcelona will need to sign a striker in the January transfer window, as Sergio Aguero has called time on his career due to a heart ailment that has forced him to hang up his boots. With Martin Braithwaite a backup option at best and Luuk de Jong failing to impress, the Catalan giants must sign a new striker.
To that end, Aubameyang has coincidentally emerged as a target for Barcelona, although Greenwood would be a long-term option for them. The Blaugrana and Arsenal also face stiff competition from Juventus in pursuit of the Manchester United forward, who is unsettled at Old Trafford.
However, the rumour seems bizarre, considering Greenwood is only 20 years old and has already featured over 100 times for Manchester United. Nonetheless, it remains to be seen if Arsenal, Barcelona and Juventus test the Red Devils’ resolve by lodging an offer for him anytime soon.
