Newcastle United could make a big offer to Barcelona for Memphis Depay, as Xavi Hernandez considers his options with the striker.
According to El Nacional, Barcelona could be tempted with a big offer from Newcastle United for star striker Memphis Depay. The cash stripped Catalans might even welcome a bid expected to be around €30 million.
Depay had been a good player for Lyon, and his performances with the French giants eventually earned him a dream move to Barcelona. The Dutch forward turned down offers from other leagues to fulfil the dream of playing for the Blaugrana.
Despite a decent start to life in Barcelona, Depay might find himself unwanted at the club amidst reports of an offer from Newcastle United. The Magpies are prepared to make a €30 million bid for the striker, and the Catalans could relish the chance to make a massive profit six months after they signed the player on a free transfer.
Depay reportedly joined under the pretext of a different project to the current one under Xavi Hernandez. Since the sacking of Ronald Koeman, the forward has not looked exactly comfortable, with pressure mounting on him with each passing game.
Barcelona’s exit from the Champions League certainly did not help matters, as Depay, considered one of the senior professionals in the attacking third, failed to inspire the team. The club is treading on a downward trajectory, and their depleting finances could prove a catalyst in sanctioning a sale for the Dutchman. On the other hand, Depay himself is reportedly considering an exit.
PSG have been mooted as a possible destination, as the French side could make a move for the forward and bring him back to Ligue 1. However, he might prefer to take up the challenge of playing in another league, with the possibility of playing in Serie A looming.
Juventus are already considering an approach whenever the opportunity arises. However, Barcelona will be asking for a substantial transfer fee, which the Bianconeri might not afford in current circumstances. This factor leaves Newcastle United as the most realistic club able to afford the forward.
Depay might evaluate any possible offer from Newcastle before deciding on a move. The Magpies are currently embroiled in a relegation battle, meaning any player choosing to join the team might end up in the Championship next season, with the club’s position in the Premier League looking unattainable with each passing week.
The decision over a move will ultimately rest with Depay, who could yet choose to remain at Barcelona and improve his performances. However, considering the money on offer, the Blaugrana might be tempted to cash in and enhance their depleted transfer kitty to sign players of Xavi’s liking.
