Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Barcelona have been offered the opportunity to sign PSG forward Mauro Icardi.
A recent report from Foot Mercato has offered a detailed update on the Paris Saint-Germain squad. It appears the Ligue 1 giants are expecting a mass exodus in the upcoming transfer windows and are willing to part ways with as many as seven plays, either in January or in the summer.
One of the notable inclusions in the list of unwanted players at PSG is Mauro Icardi. The forward has frustrated Les Parisiens’ camp with his poor performances and off-pitch controversies involving his wife, Wanda Nara. It has led to speculations over his long-term future at the club, with his services reportedly being offered to the likes of Barcelona, Newcastle and Tottenham.
Icardi was regarded as one of the best forwards in Europe when he made the move to PSG in 2019. He scored 12 goals in 20 league matches in his first season at the club, compelling the French giants to sign him up on a permanent deal worth around €50 million. However, the decision proved to be a disaster, as the forward has barely managed to live up to the expectations since.
In the last two seasons, the Argentine has made a combined total of 32 league appearances, scoring only ten times. Only three of his goals have come in the new season, with the player falling behind the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi in the pecking order.
Although Icardi favours a return to Italy, with Juventus being mooted as a potential destination, it appears his agents have conceded the fact that a move to England could be more financially advantageous for the player. As such, they have offered the striker to Newcastle United, who are expected to splash the cash next summer if they manage to survive relegation.
The new owners in Tyneside are keen on making NUFC one of the biggest clubs in Europe. Icardi, in that regard, could be an ideal man to spearhead the frontline to usher in the new era at St. James’ Park, although the Magpies have other options including the less flamboyant Gaetan Laborde.
Tottenham Hotspur are another potential destination for the Argentine. The North London giants will be looking for new forwards next season amid the uncertain future of Manchester City target Harry Kane. Icardi fits the bill well due to his experience and pedigree at the highest level of football.
However, Barcelona are by far the most interesting suitor for the former Inter Milan forward. The Catalans aren’t in a position to compete with either NUFC or Tottenham financially, but they can offer Icardi to be a part of Xavi’s new setup and help the club restore their lost glory. He isn’t expected to find any competition anytime soon, as a financially crippled Barca have been priced out of a move for nearly every top forwards across Europe.
That said, a lot could depend on how much PSG demand for the services of their star striker in January or in the summer, next year. The player still has a contract until 2024, so he could certainly cost a fortune, as PSG look to recoup most of the €50 million they had spent on the player a couple of years ago.
