Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly joined the race to sign Barcelona forward Memphis Depay, a target for Juventus and AS Roma.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Memphis Depay is the subject of interest from Paris Saint-Germain over a move in next summer’s transfer window. Serie A giants Juventus and AS Roma are also courting the Barcelona forward, in addition to PSG.
Memphis Depay joined Barcelona in the summer transfer window this year on a free transfer after running down his contract with Lyon. The move to Camp Nou has not panned out as envisioned, though, as, after a strong start to his stint, his form has withered away considerably.
The 27-year-old still has a decent record of eight goals and two assists in 19 appearances across all competitions, but his consistency has left a lot to be desired. And according to recent reports, Barcelona could cash in on the Dutch international only a year after signing him, with a slew of suitors, including Paris Saint-Germain, vying for his signature.
The interest from PSG is understandable amid the uncertainties surrounding the futures of Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria. While Mbappe has been heavily linked with Barcelona’s bitter rivals Real Madrid, Di Maria is approaching the final phase of his career anyway and might need to be phased out soon.
So, it is hardly surprising that the French giants are in the market for a wide-attacker, with Depay being a viable target. However, in addition to PSG, Serie A giants Juventus and AS Roma are also keen on securing the services of the Barcelona forward next summer.
Hence, it would behove PSG to keep their options open in the transfer market, with Ousmane Dembele, Vinicius Jr. and Riyad Mahrez among their other targets. As far as the interest in Depay is concerned, he could be deployed out wide or through the middle, making him a like-for-like replacement for Mbappe.
Meanwhile, PSG also have their sights set on another Barcelona ace in Diego Almeida, and it remains to be seen if they end up making a double raid on the Blaugrana. For now, Depay’s future at Camp Nou appears to be uncertain, and it remains to be seen if he can turn his fortunes around anytime soon.
