Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are among clubs eyeing a summer swoop for Rennes starlet Lovro Majer.
According to a report from Hommedumatch, Rennes are bracing themselves for raids from Tottenham and Manchester United for the signing of Lovro Majer. The two English giants are apparently very keen on securing the services of the highly-rated midfielder and want to wrap up the deal next summer.
Formerly of NK Lokomotiva, Majer arrived in France in the summer, joining Rennes for a fee of €12 million. It was a major coup for the French giants, as the Croatian was one of the biggest stars at his previous club Dinamo Zagreb, making quite the impression with his playmaking abilities. He also had a stellar tally of 19 goals and 25 assists in under 100 competitive matches.
Unfortunately, the 23-year-old’s progress at Rennes was halted by an early hip injury that kept him out of action for six matches. However, he has recently made his return to full fitness and is already lightening up the Ligue 1 with his performances. He was notably one of Rennes’ best performers in recent wins over Olympique Lyon and Montpellier, even scoring his maiden goal in the French top-flight last weekend.
Majer’s rapid growth in France has not gone unnoticed, with Tottenham Hotspur, for one, exploring the possibility of signing him next summer. With Tanguy Ndombele being deemed surplus to the requirements by new coach Antonio Conte, it is apparent that the Lilywhites are in the market for a new creative midfielder.
Manchester United, as well, are bracing themselves for the potential exit of Jesse Lingard. Donny van de Beek was also facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford, although his fate could rest on the hands of the new interim manager that is yet to be appointed.
Nevertheless, Lovro Majer could prove to be an appealing target for both these clubs. Blessed with immense technical quality and versatility, the Croatian international has already established himself as the future of his country’s midfield.
So much so, even Real Madrid are reportedly keeping an eye on him, having considered the 23-year-old as a potential long-term replacement for club legend, Luka Modric. Incidentally, the veteran midfielder has recently rejected an opportunity to return to Tottenham, so it will be interesting to see whether they can secure a deal for his fellow compatriot next summer.
