Manchester United star Dean Henderson has emerged as one of the options as Tottenham plan for a future without Hugo Lloris.
According to Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur have prepared their plans for a future without Hugo Lloris. The veteran goalkeeper’s contract in North London expires at the end of the season, with the player yet to sign any contract extension with the club.
It appears the Lilywhites have already started their search for a replacement as well, with Dean Henderson emerging as one of the two candidates listed as potential successors for Lloris.
The report suggests Tottenham are aware of Henderson’s precarious situation at Manchester United, having struggled to nail down a starting spot in between since returning from his successful loan spell at Sheffield United. He has indeed mustered only 27 competitive appearances for Manchester United in the past couple of years, failing to dislodge David de Gea in goal.
With the Spaniard performing better than ever this season, it appears unlikely that Henderson will be able to make his breakthrough at United anytime soon. As a result, he has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford, with Tottenham among the clubs interested in his services.
The Lilywhites are bracing themselves for a major defensive overhaul in the near future, after the appointment of Antonio Conte. While the club did sign Pierluigi Gollini in the summer, it appears Fabio Paratici wants to add more competition for the Italian next season, when Lloris will likely be gone.
The North London giants have been linked with moves for several talented goalkeepers across Europe, including England number Jordan Pickford. They are also reportedly courting Ajax’s Andre Onana, who is likely to be the cheapest option available in the market.
However, Tottenham could find themselves a middle ground in the form of Henderson. The Manchester United starlet is unlikely to cost a fortune but offers the experience in English football. He is also quite ambitious and is brimming with potential, making him an ideal long-term investment for the club.
That said, Spurs are set to face stiff competition in the pursuit of Henderson. Newcastle United are already preparing a reported bid of €20 million while the Englishman is also attracting interest from Barcelona. Manchester United themselves may have second thoughts offloading their star asset to direct rivals, so it won’t be surprising to see Tottenham turning to their other option – Sam Johnstone, in this upcoming January transfer window.
