Barcelona are reportedly weighing up the possibility of re-signing 18-year-old PSG prodigy Xavi Simons, formerly of their academy La Masia.
According to a report on Cadena SER podcast Carrusel Confidential, Xavi Simons has once again popped up on the radar of former club Barcelona. The Catalan giants are considering re-signing the 18-year-old attacker, who could run down his contract with Paris Saint-Germain.
Xavi Simons spent nine years at Barcelona’s famed academy La Masia after joining the club from CD Thader in 2010. However, the Dutch wonderkid chose to call it quits at Barcelona in 2019 to join Paris Saint-Germain, looking for a clearer pathway to first-team football.
That has not proven to be the case for the 18-year-old, though, as he has largely played for age-group teams at PSG while managing just 13 minutes of first-team action thus far. As a result, things have reached a head for Simons, who intends to run down his contract with Les Parisiens and depart Parc des Princes as a free agent next summer. Such a situation has alerted Barcelona.
Recent reports have claimed that Xavi Simons is keen on returning to Barcelona after becoming a free agent. And now, as per Carrusel Deportivo, Barcelona are considering the possibility of re-signing the teenage prodigy following the appointment of Xavi as the new manager.
With his first-team prospects at PSG not set in stone, Mino Raiola has proposed a possible return to Barcelona. As things stand, the Catalan giants are not prioritising a discussion to re-sign the 18-year-old Dutch whizkid as their focus remains on sealing moves for the January transfer window.
The first of these transfers have already been confirmed, with Dani Alves set to make a popular return to Camp Nou. Barcelona are now working on the remaining transfers for the January window but are likely to turn their attention towards reaching a pre-contract agreement with Xavi Simons at the turn of the year.
Meanwhile, it has also been reported that Real Madrid have been offered the chance to sign the 18-year-old, and it remains to be seen if they join the race to sign him. For now, it looks like Barcelona are seriously weighing up the prospect of re-signing Xavi Simons on a free transfer next summer.
