AS Roma boss Jose Mourinho could be eyeing a cut-price move for versatile defender Calum Chambers who is unwanted at Arsenal.
According to Corriere dello Sport, as relayed by Sport Witness, AS Roma and manager Jose Mourinho could explore the possibility of signing Calum Chambers in January as the defender seems unwanted at Arsenal. The Italian club could make a cut-price offer to the Gunners considering the versatile star’s contract expires in the summer.
After taking over as manager in the summer, Jose Mourinho got off to a decent start at AS Roma. Having had a few difficult years in England managing Chelsea for a second spell, then Manchester United and Tottenham, the Portuguese began well on his return to Italy.
After setting the tone early in the season, Roma’s form has tailed off in subsequent weeks, leaving the club trailing league leaders Napoli and Milan by a massive 13 points. From the stories revolving in the media, it seems that Mourinho might be planning to bring in more players in the January window, suggesting he might stick around.
Roma did make an ambitious signing in the summer by bringing in Tammy Abraham from Chelsea, which was by far the most expensive signing in the league. Mourinho and general manager Tiago Pinto have eyes for defensive and midfield targets in the January window, with a new right-back at the top of their list. And Arsenal star Calum Chambers has been offered to the Giallorossi via intermediaries.
Chambers is having a difficult time over at Arsenal. This season he has made just four appearances, including two in the league. After starting the season as the club’s first-choice right-back following a strong ending to the previous campaign, Chambers has been replaced by deadline day signing Takehiro Tomiyasu.
The Japan international has been sensational since signing from Bologna, starting each of Arsenal’s eight games in the league after his arrival. He has formed a solid partnership with fellow backline mainstays Ben White and Gabriel, and has been undroppable on current form.
Meanwhile, from selection patterns in the Carabao Cup, it does look like Cedric Soares and Ainsley Maitland-Niles are preferred to Chambers for the right-back slot. This could force the defender to take a call on his future early in January rather than wait for his contract to expire in the summer.
Roma could continue the latest trend at the club to sign English players after the arrivals of Chris Smalling and Abraham. The Italian side are also looking at other Premier League players with reported interest in Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot. Chambers could be a financially good signing compared to others.
They are also linked with Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger but they might not be unable to match his financial demands. Hence, they could turn to Chambers, who can play at right-back and in central defence, giving a versatile option to Mourinho, as the club might explore the idea of a cut-price move in January.
