Liverpool are in pole position to secure the services of Rennes winger Jeremy Doku, who is tipped to leave the club next summer.
According to football journalist Alexandre Braeckman, Liverpool are leading the race to sign Jeremy Doku. The Rennes winger is facing an uncertain future at the club and could leave at the end of the season.
Doku’s situation has put a number of clubs on red alert. Liverpool, for one, had been linked with a move for the youngster even in the summer transfer window. And it appears they will be ready to snap him next summer, with Jurgen Klopp keen on bolstering his offensive options.
Formerly of the famed Anderlecht youth academy, Doku, along with Charles de Ketelaere, another Liverpool target, is considered as one of the best up and coming talents in Belgian football. Both were a part of the nation’s squad at UEFA Euro 2020 and are currently making their presence felt for their respective clubs.
Doku, in particular, is certainly one of the hottest prospects in Ligue 1, having featured in 41 competitive outings for Rennes. His tally of just two goals and four assists might not seem too impressive, but the youngster has had a far greater influence in the final third with his pace and trickery.
In fact, the 19-year-old was recently voted as one of the top ten contenders of the Kopa Trophy, and was included in a list that includes other super-talents like Jude Bellingham, Pedri and Mason Greenwood.
Doku’s rapid rise to prominence has now attracted the attention of a Liverpool side that intend to increase the overall depth of their attacking department. The Reds have appeared far too reliant on the services of ageing stars like Mohamed Salah lately, at a time when the Egyptian is facing an uncertain future at the club.
As such, Klopp is determined to add some more options to his squad, with Doku being identified as an ideal candidate. The young Belgian can offer the much-needed youthful exuberance to the Liverpool side while his pace and trickery should make him an ideal fit for Klopp’s counter-attacking football philosophy.
The Rennes winger should provide some valuable competition for the likes of Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota as well. And at the age of just 19, the Belgian international could be a smart long-term investment for Liverpool next season.
