Liverpool are reportedly keeping tabs on the situation of Joao Felix who could leave La Liga champions Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window.
According to a report from Spanish publication Fichajes, Liverpool are among the clubs that could make a swoop for Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix who could leave the reigning La Liga champions in the winter window.
Felix came through the ranks at the academy of SL Benfica and made quite the splash when he first burst onto the first-team scenes. Having attracted admirers from all over Europe, the 21-year-old ended up signing for Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2019 in a deal that cost the Rojiblancos in excess of €100 million.
However, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing for the Portuguese international in Spain with the 21-year-old having found it a bit tough to flourish in Diego Simeone’s system. Even then, he has shown glimpses of his innate ability, although a return of just 19 goals from 81 games does not really do justice to his talents.
Felix, at times, has also been bogged down by injuries, which has further hampered his progress. And, it is now being claimed that Atletico Madrid director Andrea Berta is considering the possibility of loaning him out for the rest of the season in order to ensure that he gets regular playing time, allowing him to fulfil his potential.
This situation has now seemingly alerted a number of clubs across Europe, with Juventus and Inter Milan taking note while Liverpool, too have cast their eyes towards Felix. The 21-year-old has been on the radars of the Reds but they have never really made an attempt to sign him as of yet. But with him potentially being available on loan in January efforts could be made by the Premier League giants.
Liverpool are in need of a new striker considering as Roberto Firmino has had problems in front of goal of late. In addition to that, Divock Origi has no future at Anfield and could be on his way out as well, with the Belgian international being offered to Barcelona ahead of the January window.
With Liverpool competing on all fronts, quality depth in all positions becomes important and Felix would provide them with just that in the No. 9 slot. In addition to that, the fact that it could only be on a loan deal means there would be no risk attached to the move either. A permanent move, however, would require the Reds to shell out the big bucks as Atletico have him tied down to a contract till 2026.
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool do decide to make an approach for the 21-year-old Felix or move for someone else, with RB Salzburg’s Karim Adeyemi also an option on their radars.
