Wolves are reportedly set to revisit their transfer interest in Lille midfielder Renato Sanches in January after failing with an approach in the summer.
According to a report from The Athletic, Wolves could relaunch their bid to secure the signing of Lille and Portugal midfield star Renato Sanches in the January transfer window, after a failed move in the summer.
Sanches has seen a tremendous rise in stature after his difficult time in Bayern Munich. Having signed for the Ligue 1 outfit in 2019, the 24-year-old has managed to reinvigorate his career and went on to play a key role in Les Dogues shock Ligue 1 title win in the 2020/21 season.
This had led to strong interest in his services from top clubs in the Premier League, with Liverpool one of the teams being heavily linked with the Portuguese international. However, the Reds decided to call off his pursuit after Sanches picked up an injury early in the new season.
In spite of that, Wolves showed an intention to sign Sanches from Lille on the transfer deadline day and it was even claimed that a move was close to completion. However, that was not to be the case as the transfer did not materialise. The West Midlands’ club then made a late move for Marseille’s Boubacar Kamara but were rejected by the versatile Frenchman, meaning there were no new midfielders added.
However, as per the aforementioned report from The Athletic, Wolves could revisit their interest in Sanches in the January transfer window once the 24-year-old Portugal star’s injury issues clear up.
A new midfielder is certainly something that the Black Country outfit could do with, considering Sanches’ compatriot Joao Moutinho, at 35, is nearing the final stages of his career. Ruben Neves has done well but continues to be linked with a move to the top Premier League clubs. Leander Dendoncker is also an option at manager Bruno Lage’s disposal but another player would ensure quality depth in the department.
What now remains to be seen is if Wolves do decide to make another attempt at signing Sanches when the transfer window opens in three months’ time or wait till the summer next year to bolster their squad with another midfielder.
