Transfer News: Leeds United set to sign Daniel James

Daniel James is reportedly on the verge of joining Leeds United from Manchester United in a deal worth €28 million.

According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Daniel James seems to have played his final game for Manchester United. The 23-year-old Welsh ace is set to join Leeds United before the summer transfer window slams shut, with the deal being worth around €28 million.

Daniel James joined Manchester United from Swansea City in the summer of 2019, in what was a dream move for the young winger. The transfer initially seemed to pay off, as James produced some impressive performances early on for the Red Devils, only to slowly start fading as his maiden season at Old Trafford progressed.

The 2020/21 campaign was even more difficult for James, especially with Mason Greenwood going from strength to strength whereas Paul Pogba was also utilised out wide. The 23-year-old has been utilised a fair bit in the early stages of the season by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, starting two of the three games for Manchester United, although he has not been too impressive.

With Manchester United set to sign Cristiano Ronaldo, James is likely to see his role being reduced quite a lot, especially with Jadon Sancho arriving at Old Trafford as well, while Marcus Rashford will soon make his return after an injury layoff. As a result, it has been mooted that a move away from Old Trafford could beckon James.

To that end, several suitors have recently emerged in pursuit of James, including Everton, Leeds United and Crystal Palace. However, it is Leeds who have now clinched the signature of the 23-year-old, who once nearly joined the west Yorkshire club before he arrived at Manchester United.

The interest from Leeds is understandable considering Helder Costa has failed to make an impression following the Whites’ promotion to the Premier League. As a result, almost the entire burden of producing the returns out wide has fallen on the shoulders of Jack Harrison and Raphinha.

James, to that end, is the kind of player who can taken a lot of the workload off of the duo, which is perhaps why Leeds have been intent on signing him. And as per Fabrizio Romano, Leeds have now reached an agreement to sign James from Manchester United in a €28 million deal.

James has also agreed personal terms with the Whites, with his medical being scheduled for Tuesday, when the transfer ought to be announced. The Welsh international is now set for a new phase in his career, with his Manchester United stint ending after just two years and it will be interesting to see if he can kick on after making his way to Elland Road.
