Real Madrid have reportedly set their sights on Hertha Berlin’s Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha after his exploits at the Tokyo Olympics.
According to a report from Spanish publication Fichajes, Real Madrid have taken an interest in securing the services of 23-year-old Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha, who plies his trade for German Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin.
Cunha started out at FC Coritiba in Brazil, before moving to Europe in 2017 when he signed for Swiss club FC Sion. A year later, the centre-forward was snapped up by RB Leipzig where he did not enjoy the best of times before moving on to Hertha Berlin in January 2020.
Since arriving at the German capital club, the 23-year-old has shown some form, bagging 13 goals and 10 assists in 39 games during his eighteen-month stay. However, it was his display at the Tokyo Olympics with the Brazil national team that has put Cunha on the radars of Real Madrid.
Indeed, the 23-year-old scored three goals and set up one more in five appearances, playing a critical role in the Selecao winning back-to-back Olympic gold medals. And, that has seemingly attracted interest from Real Madrid, who are in the market for attacking reinforcements this summer.
Real Madrid have had to deal with the problem of not having a proper cover for ace goalscorer Karim Benzema. The Frenchman has been doing the bulk of goalscoring since Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure three years ago but has lacked the requisite support from those around him, while Los Blancos don’t have a quality backup for when he is unavailable either.
Luka Jovic was brought in for big money, but the move backfired while Mariano Diaz is on his way out of the club this summer. This leaves room for the signing of a new striker and even though Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland remain at the top of Real Madrid’s wishlist, a move for either is unlikely to materialise this summer due to their poor financial health.
Instead, Los Blancos could invest in a player like Cunha, who could cover for Benzema, before they go big for their top targets next summer as a long-term replacement for the veteran French striker. Apart from Real Madrid, Bayern Munich have also shown an interest in the Brazilian forward, who is valued at €30 million.
However, considering that his contract with Hertha Berlin runs till the summer of 2025, the German capital club are in no hurry to sell him and should either Real Madrid or Bayern make a move, may demand top dollar for the 23-year-old. It now remains to be seen if the Merengues interest in Cunha leads to anything substantial in the coming days.
