Manchester United have officially confirmed that they have an agreement in place to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.
As confirmed on the club’s official website and media channels, Manchester United have reached a full and final agreement with Real Madrid for the signing of French centre-back Raphael Varane. The 28-year-old will soon complete a transfer to Old Trafford from the Santiago Bernabeu subject to a medical and personal terms being agreed.
Varane has grown into one of the topmost central defenders in the game during his decade-long stint in Real Madrid. Having joined the Merengues from RC Lens in 2011, the Frenchman has won the whole lot with the club and is also a World Cup winner with Les Bleus, having been an integral part of the triumph back in 2018.
Varane’s future had been a topic of speculations for the past few months, ever since he closed in on the final year of his contract with Real Madrid. The 28-year-old turned down an offer of extension from the Spanish capital club in order to seek a new challenge in his career, putting Manchester United on high alert.
It is no secret that Manchester United are huge admirers of Varane. The Red Devils had actually made an attempt to secure his signing of the Frenchman before he moved to Real Madrid but were beaten to the punch. Over the years, there have been more unsuccessful tries to lure the defender to Old Trafford, but this summer provided them with the perfect opportunity to do so.

And, the Red Devils have done just that, having now confirmed that an agreement is in place to sign the 28-year-old. The official statement issued by Manchester United read: “Manchester United is delighted to announce the club has reached agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of French international defender and World Cup winner, Raphaël Varane, subject to a medical and to player terms being finalised.”
Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio confirmed late on Monday that a medical for Varane will take place in the next couple of days, while the personal terms have been tied down well ahead of the deal. So, it only seems a matter of mere formalities before the Frenchman is unveiled as a Manchester United player.
With the signings of Tom Heaton and Jadon Sancho already in place, adding Varane to the list of incomings shows Manchester United mean business in the current transfer window.
