Manchester United are reportedly on the verge of reaching an agreement to sign French defender Raphael Varane from Real Madrid this summer.
According to Diario AS journalist Edu Cornago on Twitter, Manchester United are ‘very close’ to reaching an agreement to secure the transfer of Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.
The 28-year-old Varane has established himself as one of the finest modern defenders in the game after enjoying a trophy-laded ten-year spell with Real Madrid. The Frenchman has won as many as three La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League trophies with Los Blancos, along with numerous other trophies.
However, having entered the final year of his contract with the club, Varane is said to be intent on moving on this summer as he looks for a new challenge in his career. And, it seems like that the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner could very well be on his way to Old Trafford, set to link up with long-time admirers Manchester United.
The Red Devils had made an attempt to sign Varane before his transfer to Real Madrid while the club have been monitoring him closely throughout his time in the Spanish capital. Heading into the new season, defence has emerged as an area that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer & co. need to address in order to bridge the gap to the top, considering the inconsistent nature of Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly.
In addition, with Axel Tuanzebe likely to depart on another loan stint and Phil Jones not part of the plans anymore, at least one centre-back has become a necessary addition for Manchester United. Numerous names have been linked over the course of the past few months, but it seems like it will be Varane that the 20-time English champions are set to sign.
Indeed, reports have already claimed that Manchester United have already agreed personal terms with Varane. And now, the aforementioned update from Edu Cornago is claiming that an agreement with Real Madrid is also imminent. If true, it will be a great move by the Red Devils, who seem to be showing the right intent in the summer transfer window this time out.
Having already reached an agreement with Borussia Dortmund for the signing of Jadon Sancho, bagging Varane on the back of that will be a huge statement of intent from Solskjaer and United as they look to bring back the glory days at Old Trafford.
