Real Madrid have reportedly been offered a shot at signing Manchester United’s French forward Anthony Martial in the summer transfer window.
According to reputed journalist Duncan Castles on the Transfer Window Podcast, Real Madrid have been presented with an interesting opportunity to secure the services of French international Anthony Martial from Premier League giants Manchester United this summer.
Martial has been with Manchester United since 2015 when he arrived from AS Monaco as a teenager. He enjoyed a stunning debut season under then-manager Louis van Gaal, but the forward hasn’t been able to perform at the same level year after year. However, the 2019/20 season offered huge hopes that he will finally deliver on his immense potential as he finished as the Red Devils’ top scorer for the season with 23 strikes.
However, the recently-concluded campaign was a disastrous one for Martial as he struggled to find the back of the net on a consistent basis before his season was cut short with an injury. The 25-year-old finished with a paltry tally of just seven goals from 36 appearances in all competitions for Manchester United.
Chelsea, Manchester City or Manchester United – Which club should Harry Kane choose? | THT Opinions
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is plotting to bring in a fresh centre-forward this summer, with Manchester United being heavily linked with Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland as well as Tottenham Hotspur superstar and England captain Harry Kane. And, with Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood already in the fold, Martial risks being left behind at Old Trafford.
That is why his agent is now reported to be trying to engineer a move away from Manchester this summer, with Martial’s services being offered to Real Madrid, according to Castles. The Merengues are set to usher in a new era under Carlo Ancelotti after Zinedine Zidane quit as manager at the end of the 2020/21 campaign. And, attack is one area where the Italian needs to strengthen this summer.
Indeed, Karim Benzema has little in the way of backup at Real Madrid while the likes of Marco Asensio, Eden Hazard, Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes have not been consistent enough from the wide areas. To that end, someone like Martial can be a handy acquisition for Los Blancos, given as he can play out wide or through the centre.
In addition, the 25-year-old could also be a cheaper alternative to Ancelotti’s preferred target, Richarlison, with Everton demanding a massive sum for the Brazilian forward. Castles adds that if Real Madrid are going to sign Martial, it would be on an initial loan deal with an option to buy, with a loan fee involved.
It now remains to be seen if such a move sees the light of the day or whether Real Madrid decide to pass up the chance to land Martial and look for other options such as Napoli’s Hirving Lozano.
