Arsenal and Liverpool are reportedly among the clubs that are eyeing a summer swoop for VfL Wolfsburg’s exciting young winger Josip Brekalo.
According to a transfer update from Italian outlet Calciomercato, Josip Brekalo has become a subject of interest from a host of top clubs across Europe, including Premier League duo Arsenal and Liverpool.
The young attacker has been one of VfL Wolfsburg’s star performers this season, flourishing under the leadership of Oliver Glasner. Although he has been a Bundesliga regular for quite some time now, his contributions in the ongoing campaign have played a key role in helping the Wolves emerge as one of the performing teams in the division.
Brekalo’s tally of just four goals and three assists might seem feeble, but his overall impact on the game has been far greater. The 22-year-old has offered pace and trickery on the far side for Wolfsburg, causing menace for the Bundesliga defences week in week out.
The Croat’s performances have not gone unnoticed either, it seems, with Arsenal and Liverpool reportedly keen on the young winger, as Mikel Arteta hopes to bolster his attacking options in the upcoming summer transfer window.
It appears the Gunners are set for quite a squad overhaul in the summer, with the likes of Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette likely to be offloaded. Martin Odegaard, too, faces an uncertain future at the club, even though Arteta is determined to secure the playmaker’s services on a permanent deal in the summer.
The addition of someone like Brekalo, in that regard, could be an interesting one. The 22-year-old has the trickery and pace to thrive in the Premier League, and indeed, at the Emirates, although one might argue that the attacker could be a better fit at Liverpool.
That is primarily because of Brekalo’s success with Wolfsburg under Glasner, who prefers a counter-attacking style of play with an emphasis on crosses inside the penalty area. The 22-year-old Croatian attacker is quite an expert, in this regard, with his explosive pace making him quite a menace for the opponents.

Liverpool’s move for Brekalo, though, could largely depend on the future of Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian wizard has been linked with a move away from Anfield, while Roberto Firmino himself has been subjected to speculation of a transfer elsewhere.
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for these two individuals. As for Brekalo, he is also courted by Atletico Madrid, AC Milan and AS Roma, in addition to the two Premier League clubs, and with Glasner likely to leave Wolfsburg after the end of the season, a move away from the Volkswagen Arena could be on the cards for the enterprising winger this summer.
