Bayern Munich have reportedly joined Barcelona in the race to sign Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum on a Bosman deal.
According to an exclusive report by Anfield Central, Bayern Munich are the latest club to show an interest in signing Georginio Wijnaldum on a Bosman deal in the summer transfer window. The Liverpool midfielder is also being tailed by Barcelona.
Wijnaldum has enjoyed a productive five-year stint at Liverpool after arriving from Newcastle United in the summer of 2016. Over the past half-a-decade, the Dutch international has been a mainstay in midfield for the Reds, amassing 232 appearances while chipping in with 22 goals and 16 assists.
However, heading into the summer transfer window, Wijnaldum’s Liverpool future appears to be bleak, with the Premier League champions having failed to reach an agreement over a renewal. With his current deal running out in less than two months, clubs are lining up to sign him on a free transfer. Barcelona and Bayern Munich are currently vying for his signature.
Barcelona hold a long-standing interest in Wijnaldum, having also attempted to sign him last year. This summer, however, the Blaugrana’s position has been strengthened, not just by the fact that he is set to become a free agent, but also because the player himself is intent on making the switch to Camp Nou.
With Philippe Coutinho facing an uncertain future at Camp Nou, and Riqui Puig and Carles Alena failing to win over Ronald Koeman, it is not hard to see why Barcelona would want to sign someone like Wijnaldum. However, the Catalan giants now face stiff competition from Bayern Munich in his pursuit.
Bayern Munich had previously ended their interest in the 30-year-old due to his excessive wage demands, with the Liverpool midfielder wanting to double his current £90,000-a-week pay. But, with Julian Nagelsmann set to take over at the Allianz Arena, the Bundesliga champions are once again hot on his trails, with the incoming manager an admirer of the Barcelona target.
Wijnaldum’s representatives, though, are yet to be approached by Bayern Munich and the report also adds that Barcelona continue to be the favourites to sign him. Liverpool, on their part, seem to be planning for life after the Dutchman, with Eduardo Camavinga one of the options on their radar. As for Wijnaldum, it remains to be seen if Bayern Munich can steal a march on Barcelona in his pursuit.
