Georginio Wijnaldum is prepared to snub a new deal with Liverpool to join Barcelona in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Daily Mirror, Georginio Wijnaldum is intent on making the switch to FC Barcelona in the summer transfer window. The Dutch international has been courted by the Catalan giants for well over a year now and is ready to call it quits at Liverpool to make his way to Camp Nou.
Wijnaldum has been one of the cornerstones of Jurgen Klopp’s successful Liverpool side since arriving from Newcastle United in the summer of 2016. A mainstay in midfield, the Dutchman has played a key role in the Reds’ glittering campaigns that saw them win the UEFA Champions League as well as the elusive Premier League title.
Till date, Wijnaldum has turned out 230 times for Liverpool, even chipping in with 22 goals and 16 assists in these outings. However, his future at Anfield has been the subject of intense speculation for a long time now, with his contract winding down this summer. The 30-year-old’s situation has, thus, piqued the interest of Barcelona among a few others.
Barcelona are in a transitional period following the election of Joan Laporta as their new president. And, midfield is one of the departments that is up to be bolstered this coming summer, albeit in an economical manner, with the Blaugrana still in a bit of a soup on the financial front.
To that end, a move for Wijnaldum has been mooted to be ideal for Barcelona, seeing as he will not cost anything in way of transfer fee. There have even been suggestions that the Catalan giants have already reached a pre-contract agreement with the Dutch international over a Bosman deal in the summer transfer window.

However, those suggestions have been quashed recently, with the suggestions by Daily Mirror also pointing towards the same, seeing as it has pointed towards Wijnaldum still “planning” to join Barcelona instead of committing his future to Liverpool.
The report claims that Wijnaldum has had his head turned by the prospect of playing alongside Lionel Messi and Memphis Depay, who is also tipped to join Barcelona on a free transfer, at Camp Nou. To that end, he is prepared to snub a new deal with Liverpool, who will, in turn, need to scour for replacements, with Eduardo Camavinga reportedly one of the targets that have been identified.
What now remains to be seen is if Barcelona do make a move for Wijnaldum if he chooses to leave Liverpool as a free agent. For now, it appears likely that the 30-year-old will no longer be at Anfield when the 2021/22 season begins, with Camp Nou his likely destination.
