Manchester United are reportedly still in contention to sign Jadon Sancho amid Borussia Dortmund’s struggles in the Bundesliga.
According to Manchester Evening News, a Manchester United switch in the summer still remains a possibility for Jadon Sancho as the Premier League continue to keep track of the Borussia Dortmund winger.
The Englishman was initially linked with a big-money move to Old Trafford last summer, but United were put off by Dortmund’s exorbitant demands even in the midst of a pandemic. Sancho’s valuation has since taken a slight dip in light of the player’s performances, Dortmund’s struggles in the Bundesliga as well as the continued financial problems posed by the pandemic.
Indeed, the Black and Yellows are on the verge of missing out on the UEFA Champions League next season as they are currently trailing fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt by seven points with just six games remaining.
Failing to clinch a top four finish could greatly aid Manchester United in the pursuit of Sancho, who has been the Dortmund’s best performer since the turn of the year. In fact, the winger has been involved in 17 Bundesliga goals this season, 12 of which have come in 2021 before his progress was eventually halted by an unfortunate injury.
Nevertheless, Sancho’s brilliant recovery in the Bundesliga Ruckrunde so far indicate that the English international has not lost his mojo and is still a top-tier option for Manchester United as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues his search for reinforcements in the wide attacking department.
The club is increasingly likely to lose Jesse Lingard as well as Donny van de Beek, who was linked with a shock player plus cash deal to Borussia Dortmund last month.
It won’t be particularly surprising to see the Dutchman being used as a makeweight for any deal surrounding Sancho, as Dortmund could certainly use a player of his calibre. However, from a sporting perspective, it appears Manchester United will be ready to offload Anthony Martial in the event of Sancho’s potential arrival at Old Trafford this summer.
A lot could depend on how Borussia Dortmund finish the campaign, knowing the Black and Yellows will have the leverage to keep hold of their stars should they finish inside top six. It will also be interesting to see how they perform in the UEFA Champions League this season, with the Bundesliga giants set to face Manchester City in the quarter-final second leg this midweek.
