Barcelona are reportedly considering the possibility of re-signing former academy man Mateu Morey from German giants Borussia Dortmund.
According to a report from Spanish publication Fichajes, Barcelona are mulling over a potential deal that would see former defender Mateu Morey return to the club from Borussia Dortmund in the summer.
Morey, 21, started out at the Mallorca academy before making the switch to Barcelona’s youth setup in 2015. The young right-back spent four years on the Catalan club’s books but left for Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2019 on a free transfer.
Having initially linked up with the Borussia Dortmund II side, Morey has become more of a regular for the first-team this season, with 21 of his 26 senior appearances for the Black and Yellows coming in 2020/21, in which the right-back has managed to deliver a couple of assists.
Morey’s gradual development at the Signal Iduna Park has now caught the attention of former employers Barcelona, who are considering the possibility of bringing him back to Camp Nou.
The right-back position has been a problem for Barcelona ever since Dani Alves decided to move on. Nelson Semedo was brought in, but the Portuguese underwhelmed for the most part before departing last summer, following the arrival of Sergino Dest. The USMNT international has had an up and down debut season so far in Catalonia, leading to the club considering signing another player for the position.
Sergi Roberto has largely played at right-back in recent seasons but his future at the club is also uncertain, making the addition of a full-back all the more important. To that end, they have been linked with a move for Hector Bellerin – another former La Masia product, while Morey has also emerged as a viable transfer candidate now.

Dortmund are going through a bit of a financial crunch due to the pandemic, as are most clubs. This could lead them to cashing in on some of their players in the summer, particularly if they miss out on Champions League football for next season. An impending managerial change at the club at the end of the season could also play a role in their transfer plans.
However, the report adds that, given Morey’s gradual growth in stature at the German outfit, Barcelona could find it difficult to snare him away from Dortmund in the summer. It remains to be seen if the Catalan giants are successful in their endeavours to bring back the 21-year-old or look elsewhere to bolster the right-back slot.
