Liverpool are reportedly set to wage battle with Real Madrid in the race to sign Kylian Mbappe from PSG in the summer transfer window.
As reported by Spanish publication AS, Real Madrid are set to face stiff competition from Liverpool in the race to sign Kylian Mbappe in the summer transfer window. PSG are desperate to tie the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner to a new deal in order to ward off his suitors and secure his long-term future.
Mbappe broke onto the scene in the 2016/17 season and has since enjoyed quite a meteoric rise to superstardom. Now universally regarded as the best players in the game currently, the Frenchman, who initially joined PSG on loan from AS Monaco in the summer of 2017 before making the switch permanent a year later, has been a pivotal player for club and country for quite some time now.
The 22-year-old’s numbers for PSG make for a stunning reading, having plundered 104 goals while also grabbing 57 assists in 142 appearances for the Ligue 1 heavyweights. His astonishing growth, though, has meant that Mbappe is constantly on the radars of the who’s who of European football, with Real Madrid and Liverpool currently keenly following him.
Real Madrid’s interest in Mbappe is well documented and there was a time when speculation was so rampant that Los Blancos had to make an official statement to distance themselves from the links to the French international. The reigning La Liga champions, though, continue to have Mbappe in their sights over a possible summer move and for good reason.
While Karim Benzema has been in brilliant touch over the past couple of seasons, it is important to note that he is on the wrong side of 30. Meanwhile, Eden Hazard’s fitness woes coupled with the inconsistencies of Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo Goes mean that he could even be an option out wide. Real Madrid, though, now face stiff competition from Liverpool in the race to sign Mbappe.
The Reds have boasted one of the most fearsome attacking trios in European football in recent memory in Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, with Diogo Jota also making a huge impact since arriving from Wolves this past summer. However, Salah’s future at Liverpool is touted to be uncertain, with Real Madrid themselves rumoured to be on his trails.
If Salah does end up leaving Liverpool, Mbappe would be the perfect replacement, not just in terms of influence but also purely on goalscoring pedigree. That Mbappe has spoken of his admiration of Liverpool could hold the Premier League champions in good stead in his pursuit
Meanwhike, PSG are scrambling to tie him down to a new contract. Mbappe’s current deal has just 18 months to run out and with Real Madrid and Liverpool circling, PSG are in desperate need to reach an agreement over a renewal, especially amid a new era under Mauricio Pochettino set to begin.
What now remains to be seen is if PSG do end up agreeing a bumper new deal to secure Mbappe’s long-term future and keep the suitors’ prying hands away. If not, we could well see Real Madrid and Liverpool launch the offensive for the Frenchman this summer.
