Tottenham Hotspur are keeping close tabs on the situation of Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos, with Jose Mourinho keen on a potential reunion.
According to Evening Standard, Sergio Ramos could be a part of Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer plans as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his defensive options next season. The Real Madrid star is facing an uncertain future at the club, with his contract expiring at the end of the campaign.
Real Madrid’s strict policy of offering their players aged over 30, a contract extension of just one year has been well-documented. In fact, previous reports from Spain from suggested a potential disagreement between the two parties regarding the new deal, with Ramos hoping to sign a two-year extension at the Bernabeu.
It has now put Tottenham Hotspur on red alert, especially given the fact that the veteran centre-back could be available for a free transfer next summer. The Lilywhites have already signed one Real Madrid superstar in the summer, in Gareth Bale, albeit on a temporary loan contract.
The Welshman, unfortunately, is yet to hit the ground running since rejoining Spurs, often struggling with his injury problems. However, it could be a very different story altogether as far as Ramos is concerned.
From a sporting perspective, the Spaniard could be a welcome addition to the Tottenham side that lost the services of their most experienced defender in Jan Vertonghen in the summer. It has left quite a hole in the defensive department, although the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier have done reasonably well this season.
Having won almost everything during his time at the Bernabeu, Ramos could bring the much-needed winning mentality at Tottenham. His past experience with Mourinho could also be critical as the Portuguese tactician looks to win some trophies during his ongoing spell in north London.
As for Real Madrid, they could face critical issues in the defensive department, especially if they fail to keep hold of the services of Ramos. Raphael Varane, despite being one of the most experienced members in the team, has not been competent enough without the Spaniard by his side, leaving Zinedine Zidane devoid of reliable options at the back.
It could ultimately force Los Blancos to scour the market for an ideal replacement for their club captain, which is perhaps why it’s hardly a surprise that the club has been linked with a move for Bayern Munich’s contract rebel David Alaba this season.
