Dimitar Berbatov has claimed that Sergio Ramos could work out well for Manchester United, if they end up signing him in a future window.
In his column for Betfair, Dimitar Berbatov has given his back to Sergio Ramos for flourishing at Manchester United, if he ends up joining them next summer. The Spanish international’s future at Real Madrid is up in the air, with negotiations over a new contract being dragged on for a long time.
Sergio Ramos is a name that has become etched in the annals of Real Madrid. The Spanish central defender has been one of the most influential figures for Los Blancos over the past decade and a half, serving the club as its captain for the last five years.
Till date, Ramos has turned out 660 times for Real Madrid and has also remarkable return of 100 goals and 40 assists. However, the veteran defender’s future at Real Madrid is uncertain, seeing as he is in the final year of his contract with the club and no closer to agreeing a renewal. As a result, he has been linked with a number of clubs, one among them being Manchester United.
Manchester United have been rumoured to be in the market for a possible central defensive signing despite the addition of Harry Maguire last year. The Englishman has even donned the leadership hat for the Red Devils, having been promoted to the role of club captain last season.
However, Victor Lindelof – his regular partner – has blown hot and cold, while Eric Bailly’s travails with injury have rendered him an unreliable figure. That leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with Axel Tuanzebe as his only other central defensive option, while Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones are expected to leave Manchester United at the earliest.
As a result, Ramos, who has also been linked with PSG among other clubs, could be a viable target for Manchester United akin to Thiago Silva at Chelsea. And, former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has tipped the Real Madrid captain to be a success at Old Trafford, should a move be completed.
Berbatov wrote, “Thiago Silva, who is even older at 36-years-old has proven that it is never too late to move to the Premier League and so far it is working out well for the Brazilian. I’m sure if Ramos wanted to move to a club like United then it would work out well for him too. He’s in great shape, he’s still a world class defender and in my opinion there’s still a lot of football left in him.”
Berbatov’s comments do make sense, considering Ramos has enjoyed a second wind in the last year or so. However, the former Manchester United striker also added that he expects Ramos to stay put at Real Madrid, who are working hard to identify possible replacements on their part. It will now be interesting to see if Manchester United make a move for Ramos, or if he remains at Real Madrid.
