Manchester United have reportedly enquired about the possibility of signing Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic on loan for the 2020/21 season.
According to a report from Spanish publication AS, Premier League giants Manchester United have submitted an enquiry to La Liga champions Real Madrid over the availability of striker Luka Jovic on a loan deal.
Jovic shot to fame during his stint at Eintracht Frankfurt. The Serbian international enjoyed a prolific 2018/19 campaign, leading the club to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League. Following his rise to prominence in Germany, Real Madrid swooped to sign him up in a big money deal last summer.
However, the 22-year-old’s stint at the Spanish capital club has been far from memorable. Jovic was hardly a regular in his debut season at Real Madrid, starting just four La Liga matches. He ended the campaign with a paltry return of two goals and two assists from 27 appearances in all competitions.
Although Jovic has started Real Madrid’s last two league games against Real Betis and Real Valladolid in the new season, it is being claimed that manager Zinedine Zidane is open to letting him leave on loan. The 22-year-old already has offers from three top clubs in the form of Inter Milan, AS Roma and AC Milan.
However, as per the report, Manchester United too have registered an interest in the seven-time capped Serbian international and have asked Real Madrid about the possibility of signing him on loan for the rest of the season.
Manchester United have been using Anthony Martial in the centre-forward role, with Marcus Rashford looking at his best on the left. The Red Devils have Odion Ighalo and Mason Greenwood as backups through the middle, although the latter has been predominantly used on the right wing by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
And with Ighalo’s loan agreement coming to an end in January next year, recruiting another striker wouldn’t be the worst idea for the 20-time English champions, with Jovic emerging as a viable option. However, Real Madrid want to send him out to a club where he will be guaranteed playing time, which might work against Manchester United.
The report adds that Jovic isn’t the only striker Manchester United are looking at. The Red Devils are also considering a move for former PSG striker Edinson Cavani, who is a free agent after his contract with the French champions ran out.
Strengthening the attacking unit remains a priority for Solskjaer, with right-wing being a major concern. Jadon Sancho has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, but not progress has been made on that front. With less than a week left for the transfer window to close, it remains to be seen who the Red Devils will bring in.
