Real Madrid have reportedly identified Inter Milan forward Romelu Lukaku as a potential long-term replacement for current first-choice number 9 Karim Benzema.
According to Daily Mail, Romelu Lukaku might be due a big-money move soon. The Belgian international, who has been on fire for Inter Milan this season, has entered the crosshairs of Real Madrid, who are looking at the striker along with three other names in search of someone who can replace Karim Benzema within the first eleven at the Bernabeu.
The report states that Lukaku’s whirlwind of a debut season at Inter Milan has attracted the interest of Real Madrid. Indeed, the Belgian international has proven that his poor return at Manchester United towards the end of his stint was a mere blip, with 33 goals so far for the Nerazzurri.
His latest exploit came in the semi-finals of the 2019-20 UEFA Europa League, with a brace and an assist to his name in a thumping 5-0 win for Inter Milan over Shakhtar Donetsk. No wonder Real Madrid are interested in Lukaku, especially with Zinedine Zidane looking to improve the squad after their defeat at the hands of Manchester City in the knockout phase of the Champions League.
Romelu Lukaku isn’t exactly referred to as a technically gifted striker. Yet, his shot accuracy is good and he has shown true signs of having great passes in his arsenal. The Belgian was trolled for his first touch or lack thereof during his time at Manchester United. But, he has disproven those claims to a certain extent at Inter Milan.
As far as Real Madrid are concerned, Luka Jovic has been a disappointment. The Serbian failed to get going at Real Madrid and Zidane clearly prefers Benzema over the former Bundesliga striker. Benzema has carried a lot of the attacking burden in the 2019-20 season for Real Madrid and Zidane would look to use the Frenchman wisely to have a similar effect in the upcoming campaign(s).
Lukaku has the strength and the finishing to be an able replacement for Benzema. The Belgian still has a distinguishable disadvantage when it comes to dribbling and a few other technical aspects. But, Madrid need a pure goalscorer and Lukaku just might be it.
Whether the Belgian international would want to move from Inter Milan just one season into his stint remains to be seen. Real Madrid though, will have a try if Zidane believes Lukaku is the man to replace Benzema.
