Liverpool are reportedly readying a shock £35 million swoop for Bournemouth winger David Brooks in the ongoing transfer window.
If a report from The Sun is to go by, Premier League champions Liverpool are plotting a raid on Championship outfit Bournemouth for the signing of Welsh winger David Brooks.
The 23-year-old Brooks started out at the academy of Manchester City before joining the Sheffield United youth setup in 2014. Having made 30-odd first-team appearances for the Blades, he joined Bournemouth in the summer of 2018, in a deal worth £11.8 million.
Brooks enjoyed a brilliant debut campaign in the Premier League with the Cherries. The Welsh winger ended the 2018/19 term with seven goals and five assists from 30 league matches. However, a serious ankle injury meant he only featured nine times in the recently concluded campaign, grabbing one goal in the process.
In spite of that, his stock seems to have not diminished as Liverpool are now eyeing a £35 million swoop for Brooks. Having romped home to the Premier League title quite comfortably, the Reds will now need to strengthen their squad in order to build upon their success.
Attack is one area where manager Jurgen Klopp could do with more quality depth as they lack reliable options beyond the terrific trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane. In addition, there is a good chance that the club will offload Xherdan Shaqiri this summer, after the Switzerland international struggled for minutes in the season gone by.
Brooks, to that end, has emerged as a viable candidate to replace Shaqiri in the attacking department for Liverpool. The 23-year-old’s versatility means Klopp could also utilise him in a central role as a false-nine as well, providing cover to Firmino.
However, Liverpool are not the only club keen on signing Brooks from the recently relegated outfit. An alternate report from the Daily Star claims that Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are also keen on the Welsh international, while Manchester United have also been credited with an interest in the recent past.
Bournemouth are staring at the prospect of losing a number of star players following their relegation. Nathan Ake has already jumped ship to sign for Manchester City, while Callum Wilson is linked with an exit. Brooks, too, could be on his way out of the club, with a host of clubs interested. It, however, remains to be seen if Liverpool do make a formal approach for the Welshman.
