Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic is set to sign a new contract with the club, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed.
As reported by the Mirror, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that veteran midfielder Nemanja Matic is set to prolong his stay at Old Trafford after agreeing terms on a new contract with the club.
Matic, who is in the final few months of his contract with Manchester United, arrived from rivals Chelsea in a £40 million deal in the summer of 2017. The 31-year-old Serb became a pivotal member of the Red Devils’ side upon his arrival and has gone on to rack up 108 appearances, in which he has scored four goals and assisted five more.
However, Matic’s future had been a subject of intense speculation after he entered the final year of his contract last summer. Rumours of a possible exit in January only grew after he found himself out of favour under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the first half of the ongoing campaign, with Fred and Scott McTominay being preferred over him.
But, injuries to McTominay and Paul Pogba meant that Matic has enjoyed a long run in the first-team over the past couple of months, during which he has proven his worth with some solid and dependable performances in the middle of the park.
Matic has started 14 of Manchester United’s last 17 matches in all competitions and has been an integral part of the team during their recent nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions. The Serbian international was particularly impressive in the Red Devils’ 1-1 draw against Everton last weekend, grabbing an assist on the day.
This run of form from the 31-year-old has seemingly convinced Manchester United to extend his stay at the club beyond the ongoing campaign. And the Red Devils’ manager Solskjaer has now confirmed that Matic has agreed personal terms over a new deal.
“He will stay here. Yeah, 100 per cent. We have agreed with him so he will stay,” the Norwegian claimed ahead of Manchester United’s weekend clash against Manchester City.
An official announcement is expected to be made soon, with Matic believed to be signing a two-year contract. Seeing the way the 31-year-old has been performing of late, it is clear that he has still plenty left to offer at this level. And handing him a new contract seems to be the right move by Manchester United.
